End Grain vs. Edge Grain
We often get asked if our cutting boards are really meant to be used because “they are too pretty to use”. The answer is yes, absolutely they are built to use. That being said though, there are differences in the boards depending on how they are made. The biggest difference in the types of boards we produce is in the grain of the wood.
End grain boards are built with the end grain of the wood facing vertically. These are your strongest cutting boards and our thickest boards, we will often refer to them as butcher block. The end grain is the strongest part of the wood and most resistant to scratching from knives. End grain is also going to be better for your knives as they will not dull as fast with an end grain board. If you use your cutting board regularly then you probably want to consider an end grain board.
Edge grain boards are built with the long grain of the wood in a horizontal direction. This often makes for really beautiful grain showing in the design of your board and more vibrant color deviations. We only use hardwoods in our cutting boards so the edge grain boards will still be strong, however, they will show scratches and can dull your knives quicker. If you are more of an occasional user of a cutting board then the edge grain board can be a great choice for you.
